Vektoritilidata, often shortened to vector data, is a fundamental concept in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. It represents geographic features as points, lines, or polygons. Each of these geometric shapes is defined by a set of coordinates, typically in a Cartesian or geographic coordinate system.

Points are used to represent discrete locations, such as the position of a well, a city, or a landmark. Lines, also known as polylines, are used to depict linear features like roads, rivers, or utility lines. They are composed of a sequence of connected points. Polygons represent areas or regions, such as lakes, parcels of land, or administrative boundaries. They are closed shapes formed by a sequence of connected points, where the first and last points are the same.

Beyond their geometric representation, vector data also carries attribute information. This attribute data describes the characteristics of each geographic feature. For instance, a point representing a city might have attributes like population, name, and type of settlement. A line representing a road could have attributes such as name, surface type, and speed limit. A polygon representing a lake might store information about its depth, water quality, or surface area.

The vector data model is widely used due to its precision and ability to represent discrete features accurately. It is particularly effective for applications requiring detailed mapping, network analysis, and precise spatial queries. Data is often stored in various file formats, with shapefiles and GeoJSON being common examples.
