Vekselstrømsnet

Vekselstrømsnet, commonly known as the alternating current (AC) power grid, refers to the network of electrical infrastructure that distributes electricity from power plants to end-users. In Norway and many other countries, this system is the primary method for delivering electricity due to its efficiency in long-distance transmission and ease of voltage transformation.

The vekselstrømsnet operates on the principle of alternating current, where the direction of electron flow periodically reverses, typically at frequencies of 50 or 60 hertz (Hz). This contrasts with direct current (DC), which flows in a single direction. The AC system allows for the use of transformers to efficiently adjust voltage levels for transmission and distribution, reducing energy loss over long distances.

In Norway, the national grid is managed by Statnett SF, the state-owned transmission system operator, which ensures reliable and stable electricity supply across the country. The grid connects various power plants, including hydroelectric, wind, and thermal sources, enabling a balanced distribution of energy demand and supply. Interconnections with neighboring countries also facilitate cross-border electricity trade and enhance grid stability.
