The core principle involves the chemical reaction of hydrogen, typically with oxygen, to produce energy. This reaction can occur through combustion, similar to traditional fuels, or electrochemically in fuel cells.

Hydrogen itself is a highly abundant element, but it is rarely found in its pure form on Earth. Therefore, producing hydrogen for these applications often requires energy-intensive processes, such as electrolysis of water or steam reforming of natural gas. The environmental impact of vedynkäyttöisillä systems is therefore closely tied to the method of hydrogen production.
