Vedel

Vedel is a term found in several Slavic languages as a past tense form of the verb “to know,” used to indicate that someone knew something in the past. The form stems from Proto-Slavic *věděti (to know) and is cognate across related languages, with variations in spelling and pronunciation.

In Czech, the related infinitive is vědět; the past tense masculine singular is věděl. In Slovak, the past tense masculine singular is vedel. In Slovenian, the past tense masculine singular is vedel, derived from the verb vedeti (to know). These forms are closely related but differ in diacritics and phonology among the languages.

Orthography can affect interpretation. When diacritics are omitted, the form appears as vedel in ASCII texts, which can obscure the specific language or etymology. Nevertheless, the core meaning remains the same across these languages: a statement about knowledge in the past.

Beyond its grammatical use, vedel typically appears as a common verb form within sentences in Czech, Slovak, and Slovenian texts.
