Vattenåterabsorption

Vattenåterabsorption, also known as water reabsorption, is a crucial physiological process in many biological systems, most notably within the kidneys of vertebrates. This process involves the movement of water from the filtrate back into the bloodstream. In the kidneys, water reabsorption is essential for concentrating urine, conserving body water, and maintaining fluid balance. It primarily occurs in the renal tubules, specifically the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle, the distal convoluted tubule, and the collecting ducts.

The mechanism of water reabsorption is largely passive, driven by osmotic gradients. As solutes like sodium ions are actively transported out of the tubular fluid, the concentration of solutes inside the tubule increases, creating an osmotic pressure that draws water out of the tubule and into the surrounding interstitial fluid. From there, the water enters the peritubular capillaries and venules, returning to the systemic circulation. Hormones play a significant role in regulating the extent of water reabsorption, with antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, being a key player. ADH increases the permeability of the distal convoluted tubule and collecting ducts to water by inserting aquaporin channels into their cell membranes, thereby allowing more water to be reabsorbed and producing more concentrated urine.

Imbalances in water reabsorption can lead to various health issues. Insufficient reabsorption can result in excessive water loss and dehydration, while excessive reabsorption can contribute to fluid overload and conditions like edema. The intricate regulation of water reabsorption is vital for maintaining homeostasis within the body.
