Vattenjetsågning

Vattenjetsågning, also known as waterjet cutting, is a subtractive manufacturing process that utilizes a high-pressure jet of water to cut a wide range of materials. This water jet is typically mixed with an abrasive substance to enhance its cutting power. The process works by directing a focused stream of water and abrasive particles at the material to be cut. The immense pressure and the abrasive action erodes and removes material, creating a precise cut.

The water jet is propelled by a pump that can generate pressures exceeding 60,000 psi. The nozzle, often made of diamond or sapphire, further focuses the water stream to a very small diameter, typically between 0.004 and 0.04 inches. When abrasives are used, they are typically mixed with the water just before it exits the nozzle. Common abrasives include garnet and aluminum oxide.

Vattenjetsågning offers several advantages. It is a cold cutting process, meaning it does not generate heat-affected zones, which can alter the material properties. This makes it ideal for cutting heat-sensitive materials like plastics, composites, and certain metals. The process is also very versatile, capable of cutting materials ranging from soft foams to extremely hard metals and stone. Furthermore, it can achieve intricate shapes and tight tolerances with minimal kerf, the width of the cut. Applications for vattenjetsågning are diverse, including metal fabrication, aerospace, automotive, stonework, and signage.
