Vastavirtatyyppistä is a Finnish term that translates to "counter-current type" or "opposite stream type." It is commonly used in various contexts to describe a system or process where two or more flows move in opposite directions. This principle is fundamental to efficient energy and mass transfer in many natural and engineered systems.

In biology, the counter-current exchange mechanism is a prime example. This occurs in structures like fish gills or bird legs, where blood flows in the opposite direction to the surrounding fluid. This arrangement maximizes the diffusion of substances, such as oxygen into the blood or heat away from the body, by maintaining a favorable concentration gradient along the entire exchange surface.

In engineering, the vastavirtatyyppistä principle is applied in heat exchangers and chemical reactors.
