Vasodilátorokat, or vasodilators, are a class of drugs that widen blood vessels. This widening, known as vasodilation, reduces resistance to blood flow, thereby lowering blood pressure. By increasing the diameter of the blood vessels, vasodilators allow blood to flow more easily, which can improve circulation and reduce the workload on the heart.

There are several mechanisms by which vasodilators can operate. Some directly relax the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels. Others work by interfering with the body's natural mechanisms that constrict blood vessels, such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system or the sympathetic nervous system. Certain vasodilators also act by increasing the availability of nitric oxide, a potent vasodilator naturally produced by the body.

Vasodilators are used to treat a variety of medical conditions. Their primary use is in managing hypertension (high blood pressure). They are also prescribed for heart failure, angina pectoris (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart), and peripheral artery disease. In some cases, they may be used to treat pulmonary hypertension or certain neurological conditions.

Common side effects of vasodilators can include headache, dizziness, flushing, and rapid heart rate. The specific side effects and their severity depend on the type of vasodilator used and the individual patient's response. It is important for patients to take vasodilators exactly as prescribed by their doctor and to report any adverse effects.
