The process is primarily driven by the vascular cambium, a layer of meristematic cells located between the bark and the wood of the stem.

During vasalását, the vascular cambium produces two types of cells: xylem, which conducts water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant, and phloem, which transports sugars and other metabolic products downward from the leaves.
