Variatsioonilõiked, meaning "variation cuts" in Estonian, refers to a set of techniques used in music composition. These techniques involve taking a pre-existing musical idea, often a melody or a rhythmic pattern, and systematically altering it to create new musical material. The core principle is the modification of the original theme while retaining some recognizable connection to it.

Common methods of variatsioonilõiked include changing the melody's rhythm, harmony, or instrumentation. Composers might also transpose the theme to a different key, invert it (play it upside down), or augment or diminish its note values. Retrograde, where the theme is played backward, is another possibility.
