Varavirtalähteissä, often translated as backup power sources or uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), are devices designed to provide continuous power to electrical equipment during a mains power failure. They are crucial for maintaining the operation of critical systems and preventing data loss or damage.

The primary function of a varavirtalähde is to detect an interruption in the primary power supply and seamlessly switch to an alternative power source. This alternative source is typically a battery, although other options like generators can also be employed. The transition is designed to be so rapid that connected devices do not experience any noticeable interruption.

Varavirtalähteet are commonly used in various settings, including data centers, hospitals, financial institutions, and homes. In these environments, they protect sensitive electronics such as servers, medical equipment, and personal computers from power surges, sags, and complete outages. This protection ensures the integrity of operations and prevents costly downtime.

There are different types of varavirtalähteissä, including standby, line-interactive, and online (or double-conversion) UPS systems. Standby units are the most basic, switching to battery power only when a failure is detected. Line-interactive units offer some voltage regulation and are more efficient. Online UPS systems provide the highest level of protection by continuously running equipment from the battery, with the mains power only recharging the battery and acting as a backup to the battery. The selection of a specific type depends on the criticality of the equipment being protected and the desired level of power conditioning.
