Varakan

Varakan is a coastal city and administrative center of Varakan Province in the fictional nation of Lyria. It lies on a natural harbor along the eastern coast and serves as a regional commercial hub with a temperate maritime climate.

The name Varakan derives from the Varaki language, meaning "water city," a designation found in early port records.

Varakan was established as a trading post in the 11th century. It grew as a harbor for timber, spice, and pottery, and was fortified in the 15th century to defend the harbor. It became the provincial capital in the 18th century and later joined the modern federation of Lyria.

The city covers about 80 square kilometers, including a peninsula that forms its inner harbor. The Varak River runs inland to support fisheries and industry in the area.

The harbor remains central to Varakan’s economy, complemented by a fishing fleet, shipbuilding, and light manufacturing. Tourism has grown in the Old Quarter and along the waterfront, where historic architecture and seafood cuisine attract visitors.

The population is around 420,000. Varaki is the official language, with minority communities speaking neighboring dialects. The city hosts diverse religious and cultural communities, contributing to a multicultural urban life.

Notable landmarks include Varakan Citadel, the Lighthouse of Dawn, and the Old Market. The annual Festival of Tides celebrates maritime heritage with music, dance, and seafood cuisine.

Varakan has a commercial port, a rail link to the regional capital, and an airport about 25 kilometers away. Varakan University, founded in the early 20th century, specializes in maritime studies and regional history.
