Vanuserühm

Vanuserühm is a term used in demography, sociology, and market analysis to refer to a cohort of people defined by their age. The concept provides a basic unit for statistical description, policy planning, and targeted communication. The word is Estonian, combining vanus (age) and rühm (group).

Age groups are not universally fixed; different organizations define cutoffs depending on purpose. Common schemes include broad divisions such as children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, as well as more detailed ranges like 0–4, 5–9, 10–14, 15–24, 25–64, and 65+. In Estonia and many national statistics systems, age groups are defined to support census data, health planning, education, pension policy, and social services.

Applications of vanuserühm include describing population structures in demographic analysis, guiding policy to allocate resources, and supporting research on life-course patterns and social change. Grouping by age enables comparisons across regions and over time, and aids in forecasting needs such as schools, healthcare, and retirement provision.

Limitations of relying on age groups include the fact that chronological age may not reflect an individual’s functional status, health, or social role. Some analyses supplement age-based categories with measures of biological age, life stage, or cohort effects to capture variations within age groups.
