Vanniyars

The Vanniyars, also known as Vanniyakula Kshatriyas or Agnikulakshatriyas, are a Tamil community primarily found in the northern and central districts of Tamil Nadu, India. Their traditional occupation has been agriculture and soldiery. The term "Vanniyar" is derived from the Tamil word "vanni," meaning fire, and they are often associated with a legend linking their origin to a sacrificial fire ritual.

Historically, the Vanniyars were a prominent landowning and warrior class in the region. They played a significant role in the political and social landscape of medieval Tamil Nadu. Over time, their status and economic standing have evolved, and like many communities in India, they have faced socio-economic challenges.

The Vanniyars are organized into various sub-clans and follow distinct customs and traditions. They celebrate festivals and observe rituals common to the broader Tamil culture, with some specific to their community. In contemporary India, Vanniyars are actively involved in various professions and occupations, and their political representation and social activism are notable aspects of their community's engagement. Their presence is particularly concentrated in districts like South Arcot, North Arcot, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Thanjavur.
