Vannelektrolyse

Vannelektrolyse, also known as galvanic or electrolysis of water, is a chemical process used to split water (H2O) into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, through the application of electrical energy. This process is based on the principle of electrolysis, where an electric current is passed through an electrolyte to induce chemical reactions at the electrodes.

In vannelektrolyse, an electrolyzer consists of two main electrodes submerged in water, often containing an electrolyte like potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide to enhance conductivity. When an electrical current flows through the system, water molecules at the anode (positive electrode) release oxygen gas, protons, and electrons. Simultaneously, at the cathode (negative electrode), protons gain electrons to form hydrogen gas. The gases are collected separately, facilitating their use as clean energy sources or industrial feedstocks.

Vannelektrolyse is considered a sustainable method for hydrogen production, especially when powered by renewable energy sources such as wind or solar power. It plays a significant role in the development of green hydrogen, which aims to reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional hydrogen production techniques, such as steam methane reforming.
