Vanhasta

Vanhasta is a coastal municipality in the fictional Nordskäri region of the country of Norria. The main town sits on the mainland with several inhabited islets connected by bridges and ferries. The municipality covers about 72 square kilometers, of which roughly two thirds are land and one third water. The population is around 3,000.

The name Vanhasta is believed to derive from local language elements meaning "old harbor," though the precise origin is uncertain.

History: Vanhasta began as a medieval fishing hamlet and grew through timber and tar trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. It received parish rights in the 1800s and municipal status in 1865. In the 20th century, road improvements and the ferry network integrated Vanhasta more closely with neighboring communities; fishing remained central.

Governance: The town is governed by a municipal council of 15 members elected every four years. It is part of the Nordskäri regional administration, sharing education, health care, and waste services with nearby municipalities.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy relies on small-scale fishing, aquaculture, local crafts, and tourism. A small marina supports recreational boating, and regular ferries link Vanhasta to surrounding islands and the mainland.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include a timber church dating from 1692 and local woodcarving workshops. The annual Harvest Festival in September features markets, music, and seafood dishes.

Demographics and education: The community has a balanced age structure with a slowly aging trend. Education is provided by a primary school in the town; older students attend secondary schools in neighboring areas.
