Vangille

Vangille is a small commune in the department of Côte‑d’Or, located in the Bourgogne‑Franche‑Comté region of eastern France. The municipality covers an area of 12.5 square kilometres and lies between 210 and 350 metres above sea level. According to the 2017 census, its population was 382 residents, which represents a slight decline from previous decades.

The local economy is primarily agricultural, with vineyards, cereal cultivation, and an artisanal cheese plant that operates on the outskirts of town. Weekly markets are held each Sunday, and a longstanding wool production industry, dating back to the nineteenth century, contributes to the commune’s identity.

Historical and cultural landmarks include the 12th‑century Romanesque Church of Saint Martin, which is designated as a historic monument. The surrounding landscape is crossed by the Vangille River, a tributary of the Saône, which supports a modest fishing tradition. Vangille is accessible by the departmental road D15 and lies roughly 18 kilometres north of Dijon.

Notable figures from Vangille include the painter Paul Vangille (1881–1947) and the modernist architect Henriette Vangille, both of whom are regarded as contributors to the region’s cultural heritage.
