In chemistry, light-sensitive compounds undergo a chemical change when exposed to light. This property is utilized in photography, where light causes a reaction on photographic film or paper, creating an image. Photodegradation is another example, where light causes materials like plastics or dyes to break down over time. Certain chemicals are intentionally designed to be light-sensitive for specific applications, such as in photolithography used in semiconductor manufacturing.

In biology, many organisms exhibit light sensitivity. Plants, for instance, are famously photosensitive. They use sunlight for photosynthesis, the process of converting light energy into chemical energy to fuel their growth. The timing of plant growth and flowering is often regulated by light cycles. Animals also display light sensitivity. The eyes of animals contain photoreceptor cells that detect light, enabling vision. Many animals have adaptations for light-sensitive environments, such as nocturnal animals with enhanced night vision or organisms living in deep water that can detect faint light.
