Valopöytä

Valopöytä, often translated as light table or lightbox, is a translucent surface used for viewing transparencies or illuminating artwork from below. Typically, a valopöytä consists of a flat, smooth surface, usually made of glass or a frosted acrylic material, backed by a light source. This light source can be incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, or more recently, energy-efficient LEDs. The purpose of the illumination is to allow light to pass through thin or translucent materials placed on the surface, making them visible and often highlighting details.

Historically, valopöydät were essential tools for artists, illustrators, animators, and photographers. They were used for tracing drawings, transferring designs onto different surfaces, retouching photographic negatives and slides, and for creating animation cels. The even and consistent light provided by the table allowed for precise work and easy observation of subtle details.
