Valokäyrä

A valokäyrä, or light curve, is a graph of an astronomical object's brightness over time. It is a fundamental tool in astronomy used to study a wide variety of celestial phenomena. By observing how an object's brightness changes, astronomers can deduce important information about its physical properties and behavior.

The shape and characteristics of a light curve can reveal a great deal. For instance, the periodic dimming and brightening of a star can indicate the presence of a planet orbiting it. As the planet passes in front of the star (a transit), it blocks a small portion of the star's light, causing a dip in the observed brightness. The depth and duration of this dip provide information about the planet's size and orbital period. These variations can be caused by pulsations within the star, eclipsing binary star systems, or other complex physical processes.
