Valoaukkoja refers to a type of optical phenomenon characterized by a bright spot or patch of light observed at night in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The phenomenon is also known as the "sun dog" or "mock sun," although this term primarily refers to a different optical effect.

Valoaukkoja occurs when the Moon is low on the horizon and is shining through a layer of ice crystals in the atmosphere. The ice crystals act as tiny prisms, refracting and reflecting the light in a way that creates a diffuse, bright region around the Moon's disk. This effect is intensely colorful due to the phenomenon of dispersion, where shorter, blue wavelengths are refracted more than longer, red wavelengths.
