Vallikannu

Vallikannu is a type of traditional fishing boat originating from the southern coast of India, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu. The name "Vallikannu" translates to "big fishing boat" in the local Tamil language.

These boats have been used for centuries by local fishermen, known as Vallikannumar, who reside in coastal villages and rely on fishing as their primary source of livelihood. Vallikannu boats are known for their distinctive design, which features a long and narrow hull, with a pointed bow and a square stern. They are typically constructed from wood and have a blunt keel to maintain stability in the harsh sea conditions off the Tamil Nadu coast.

Vallikannu boats are designed to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the Indian Ocean, including rough seas and strong winds. They are equipped with a single mast with a horizontal yoke, and a square sail made of cotton or jute cloth. The boats are operated by a crew of 8-10 men, who use traditional fishing gear such as nets and lines to catch a variety of fish and shellfish.

Despite the introduction of modern fishing methods and boats, Vallikannu remains an important part of the traditional fishing industry in Tamil Nadu. The boats are still used by local fishermen, who carry on the centuries-old tradition of fishing with Vallikannu. Efforts are being made to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Vallikannu boats, by restoring and preserving the traditional vessels and promoting the traditional fishing practices of the local community.
