Valjastustyö, often translated as "harnessing work" or "harnessing," refers to the process of preparing and fitting an animal, typically a horse, with the necessary equipment for pulling a load or being ridden. This work involves understanding the animal's anatomy and temperament to ensure the harness is comfortable, safe, and effective.

The primary components of a harness include the collar, traces, backband, girth, and bridle. The collar is crucial for distributing the pulling force evenly across the animal's shoulders and chest, preventing injury. Traces connect the collar to the load or vehicle. The backband and girth help to keep the harness in place, and the bridle is used for steering and control.

Proper valjastustyö requires skill and knowledge. An ill-fitting harness can cause discomfort, chafing, and even serious harm to the animal, hindering its ability to perform. Conversely, a well-fitted harness allows the animal to work efficiently and with less strain.
