The concept draws on epistemological theories that regard knowledge as socially and culturally mediated, rather than purely objective. In this view, reality is not a fixed entity that is simply observed but a construct that emerges from language, discourse, and shared practices.

In the early twentieth century, phenomenologists such as Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau‑Ponty emphasized the role of lived experience in shaping reality, whereas later thinkers like Thomas Kuhn argued that scientific paradigms define what counts as reality in particular contexts. In cultural studies, scholars such as Stuart Hall and Michel Foucault expanded the notion to include power relations, suggesting that dominant discourses shape public perceptions of truth.
