Vakvizsgálatok, also known as ophthalmological examinations or eye exams, are comprehensive assessments of a person's vision and eye health. These examinations are conducted by ophthalmologists or optometrists to detect and diagnose a wide range of eye conditions and diseases. The process typically begins with a review of the patient's medical history and any existing vision problems.

A fundamental part of a vakvizsgálat involves checking visual acuity, which measures how clearly a person can see at different distances. This is often done using a Snellen chart. Refraction testing is also a crucial component, determining the eye's refractive error, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism, and is used to prescribe corrective lenses like glasses or contact lenses.

Ophthalmologists also examine the external structures of the eye, including the eyelids and conjunctiva, and then proceed to evaluate the internal structures. This often involves using specialized instruments like a slit lamp to magnify the cornea, iris, and lens, looking for signs of cataracts, glaucoma, or other abnormalities. Intraocular pressure is measured to screen for glaucoma. Finally, the health of the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye is assessed, often after dilating the pupils with eye drops. Early detection through regular vakvizsgálatok is vital for maintaining good vision and preventing serious eye conditions.
