Vaihtovirtakäyttäytyminen refers to the behavior of electrical circuits and components when subjected to an alternating current (AC). Unlike direct current (DC), which flows in one direction, AC periodically reverses its direction. This characteristic leads to different phenomena and design considerations compared to DC circuits.

When AC is applied to a resistor, it behaves similarly to DC, with the current and voltage being in phase. However, in circuits containing inductors and capacitors, the behavior becomes more complex. Inductors resist changes in current, causing a phase lag between voltage and current. Capacitors, conversely, oppose changes in voltage, resulting in a phase lead. These effects are known as reactance.

The combination of resistance and reactance in an AC circuit is called impedance. Impedance determines the overall opposition to current flow and is a crucial factor in AC circuit analysis and design. Power in AC circuits can also be more complex than in DC circuits, involving real power (the power that does useful work), reactive power (power associated with magnetic and electric fields), and apparent power.
