Vaihemuodot

Vaihemuodot, a Finnish term, translates to "phase shapes" or "form shapes" and refers to the characteristic outlines or forms of a celestial body during its observable illumination by a light source, most commonly the Sun. These shapes are a direct consequence of the changing angles at which we view the illuminated portion of the object as it orbits its parent star.

The most familiar example of vaihemuodot is seen with the Moon as observed from Earth. As the Moon orbits the Earth, the amount of its sunlit surface visible to us changes, resulting in the familiar phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. Each of these represents a distinct vaihemuoto.

This phenomenon is not exclusive to the Moon. Planets like Venus and Mercury, which orbit closer to the Sun than Earth, also exhibit vaihemuodot when viewed through telescopes. Venus, in particular, shows a full range of phases, from a thin crescent when it is on the far side of the Sun relative to Earth, to a full disk when it is on the near side. Mars and other outer planets also display subtle phase changes, though these are less pronounced due to their greater distance from the Sun and Earth. Understanding vaihemuodot is crucial in astronomy for determining the orbital characteristics and relative positions of celestial bodies.
