Vaccineresistant

Vaccineresistant is an adjective used to describe phenomena in which vaccine-induced protection is reduced or absent. It can refer to pathogens that evade immunity conferred by vaccines as well as to individuals or populations that fail to mount adequate immune responses. In practice, the term encompasses both vaccine escape by pathogens and host-related incomplete protection.

Pathogen-related vaccine resistance occurs through genetic variation that alters vaccine target antigens, enabling immune escape. Mechanisms include antigenic drift or shift in viruses, phase variation and capsule changes in bacteria, and selection pressure from vaccination that favors escape variants. Vaccines may also be less effective if they target a narrow set of antigens or if circulating strains differ from those used to design the vaccine. Ongoing viral evolution and differences in regional strain prevalence can contribute to apparent resistance over time.

Non-responder or hypo-responder individuals are another source of reduced vaccine protection. Genetic factors, age, immunocompromising conditions, and prior exposure can influence the magnitude and duration of vaccine-induced immunity, leading to lower antibody titers or shorter protection. This is not a property of the vaccine alone but of the host immune response.

Public health strategies to mitigate vaccine resistance include enhanced surveillance of circulating strains, periodic updating of vaccine composition, development of vaccines that target conserved elements, use of adjuvants to boost responses, and booster vaccination programs. Combined with non-pharmaceutical interventions when appropriate, these approaches aim to sustain effective protection against evolving pathogens.
