VaCl

VaCl, or Vanadium(III) chloride, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula VCl3. It is a crystalline solid, typically appearing as dark purple or reddish-violet crystals. VaCl is paramagnetic, meaning it is weakly attracted to magnetic fields.

This compound is soluble in water and alcohol, undergoing hydrolysis in the presence of moisture to form hydrated vanadium(III) species. It is an important precursor in the synthesis of other vanadium compounds and is used in various chemical reactions, including as a catalyst in some polymerization processes. VaCl is also employed in the production of vanadium metal and alloys.

Vanadium(III) chloride is typically prepared by the reduction of vanadium(V) oxide or vanadium(IV) chloride with a reducing agent, or by the direct reaction of vanadium metal with chlorine gas at elevated temperatures. It is sensitive to air and moisture, and should be stored under an inert atmosphere.
