VLANrajapintoja, also known as VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), is a networking protocol used to manage Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) in a switched network. It was developed by Cisco Systems and is primarily used to maintain a consistent VLAN configuration across multiple switches within a network. VTP operates by using a client-server model, where one or more switches act as VTP servers, and the rest act as VTP clients. The VTP server is responsible for maintaining the VLAN database and distributing it to the VTP clients.

VTP operates over trunk links, which are connections between switches that carry traffic for multiple VLANs. When a VTP server adds, deletes, or renames a VLAN, it sends an update to all VTP clients over the trunk links. The clients then update their VLAN databases accordingly. This ensures that all switches in the network have a consistent VLAN configuration.

VTP has three modes of operation: server, client, and transparent. In server mode, the switch can create, modify, and delete VLANs, and it advertises these changes to other switches. In client mode, the switch cannot create, modify, or delete VLANs, but it can receive and apply VLAN configuration changes from the VTP server. In transparent mode, the switch does not participate in VTP, but it can forward VTP advertisements to other switches.

VTP is a proprietary protocol developed by Cisco, and it is not compatible with non-Cisco switches. This can be a limitation in networks that include switches from different manufacturers. Additionally, VTP can be a security risk if not properly configured, as it allows for the propagation of VLAN configuration changes without authentication. Therefore, it is important to carefully configure VTP and use other security measures to protect the network.
