VANOS, which stands for Variable Nockenwellensteuerung, is a variable valve timing system developed by BMW. It is designed to optimize engine performance and efficiency by adjusting the timing of the camshafts. The system typically operates by hydraulically rotating the camshaft relative to its drive sprocket, thereby altering the valve overlap. This adjustment can lead to improved torque across a wider range of engine speeds, enhanced fuel economy, and reduced emissions.

There are several generations of VANOS. The original single VANOS system, introduced in the early 1990s, controlled only the intake camshaft. Later iterations, known as double VANOS, were introduced to control both intake and exhaust camshafts, providing even finer control over valve timing. More advanced versions of VANOS have also incorporated features like continuously variable valve lift in some models.

The VANOS system relies on several components to function, including solenoid valves that direct oil pressure to actuators on the camshaft phasers, oil pressure sensors, and engine control unit (ECU) software that determines the optimal valve timing based on various engine parameters such as engine speed, load, and temperature. Issues with the VANOS system can manifest as rough idling, hesitation, loss of power, and increased fuel consumption. Common failure points include worn solenoids, internal leaks within the camshaft phasers, or degraded O-rings.
