Völklingen

Völklingen is a town in the Saarland state of Germany, located on the Saar River. It is part of the Saarbrücken district and lies approximately 15 kilometers west of the state capital. The town has a population of around 39,000 residents and is characterized by its industrial past, particularly in iron and steel production.

Historically, Völklingen's development is closely tied to the Völklingen Ironworks (Völklinger Hütte), which was founded in 1873. This site became one of the largest and most modern ironworks in Europe. Although production ceased in 1986, the Völklingen Ironworks has been preserved and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, serving as a museum and cultural center, showcasing the industrial heritage of the region.

Beyond its industrial legacy, Völklingen offers green spaces and recreational areas. The town is situated in a valley formed by the Saar River, providing opportunities for outdoor activities. It is well-connected by road and rail, facilitating access to neighboring towns and cities. The local economy has diversified since the decline of heavy industry, with a focus on service sectors and small to medium-sized enterprises. Völklingen is also known for its annual artistic and cultural events.
