Võrgupoolprotokoll, also known as Network Half-duplex Protocol, refers to a communication method in networking where data can only be transmitted in one direction at a time. This means that two devices connected using a half-duplex protocol cannot send and receive data simultaneously. If one device is transmitting, the other must wait for the transmission to complete before it can begin sending its own data. This is in contrast to full-duplex communication, where both devices can transmit and receive at the same time.

This type of communication is often implemented at the physical layer of the network model. Examples of technologies that have historically used half-duplex communication include older Ethernet hubs and certain radio communication systems. While modern networking predominantly utilizes full-duplex to maximize efficiency and speed, understanding half-duplex is important for comprehending the evolution of network technologies and for diagnosing issues in legacy systems. The primary limitation of half-duplex is the potential for collisions, where both devices attempt to transmit at the same time, resulting in corrupted data. Protocols designed for half-duplex environments often include mechanisms to detect and handle these collisions, such as Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) used in classic Ethernet.
