Võreenergia refers to the energy associated with the formation of a crystal lattice from individual ions. It is a fundamental concept in solid-state chemistry and physics, particularly relevant to ionic compounds. When gaseous ions combine to form a solid ionic crystal, energy is released. This released energy is known as lattice energy. Conversely, lattice energy is the energy required to completely separate one mole of a solid ionic compound into its gaseous constituent ions.

The magnitude of lattice energy is influenced by several factors. According to the Born-Lande equation, lattice energy is directly proportional to the product of the charges of the cation and anion and inversely proportional to the distance between their centers. Therefore, ions with higher charges and smaller radii tend to form compounds with higher lattice energies. For example, magnesium oxide (MgO), with Mg^2+ and O^2- ions, has a significantly higher lattice energy than sodium chloride (NaCl), which involves Na+ and Cl- ions. The arrangement of ions within the crystal lattice, characterized by Madelung constants, also plays a role in determining lattice energy.

Lattice energy is a significant factor in the stability of ionic compounds. Compounds with high lattice energies are generally more stable and have higher melting and boiling points. It is also a crucial component in the Born-Haber cycle, a thermodynamic method used to calculate lattice energies indirectly from other measurable thermodynamic quantities.
