Vätekarbonater

Vätekarbonater, often referred to as bicarbonates, are a class of chemical compounds containing the bicarbonate ion, HCO3-. This ion is an amphoteric species, meaning it can act as both an acid and a base. In aqueous solutions, it plays a crucial role in buffering systems, helping to maintain a stable pH. The most common and well-known example is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda. Sodium bicarbonate is used in baking, as a cleaning agent, and as an antacid.

Bicarbonates are formed when carbonic acid (H2CO3) loses one proton. Carbonic acid itself is formed when carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water. This equilibrium is central to many natural processes, including the buffering of oceans and blood. In geological contexts, bicarbonates are significant components of many minerals, such as nahcolite (natural sodium bicarbonate) and trona (a sodium sesquicarbonate).

Other important bicarbonate compounds include potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), used as a food additive and in some fire extinguishers, and calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2), which is soluble and contributes to the hardness of water. When calcium bicarbonate is heated or exposed to air, it can decompose, leading to the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a process that can cause scale buildup. The presence and reactivity of bicarbonate ions are fundamental to a wide range of chemical, biological, and geological phenomena.
