Värvifiltritel, known in English as color filters, are optical devices that selectively transmit specific wavelengths of light while absorbing or reflecting others. They are essential components in a wide range of applications, from photography and scientific instrumentation to everyday consumer electronics.

The fundamental principle behind a color filter is its ability to interact with light based on its spectral properties. When white light, which is a composite of all visible wavelengths, strikes a color filter, the filter material absorbs certain wavelengths and allows others to pass through. For instance, a red filter will absorb most of the green and blue light, while transmitting red light.

Color filters can be manufactured using various materials and techniques. Pigments or dyes are commonly used in gelatin or plastic substrates to create subtractive color filters, often found in photography. These methods utilize the principles of light interference to reflect or transmit specific colors.

In scientific research, they are crucial for spectroscopy, microscopy, and other analytical techniques that require the isolation of particular light frequencies.
