Väljaköhimine refers to the act of forcefully expelling mucus or phlegm from the lungs and airways. It is a common physiological reflex that helps to clear the respiratory tract of irritants, foreign particles, and excess secretions. The process involves a deep inhalation followed by a sudden, forceful exhalation, often accompanied by a characteristic sound.

This reflex is triggered when irritants are detected in the airways, stimulating nerve endings that signal the brain to initiate a cough. The body's response is to create a strong outward airflow to dislodge and expel the offending material. While a voluntary cough can be suppressed, a strong urge to cough, leading to väljaköhimine, is typically harder to control.
