Välittäjäainereseptori, known in English as neurotransmitter receptor, is a protein molecule found on the surface of a cell, typically a neuron, that binds to a specific neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals from one neuron to another across a synapse. When a neurotransmitter binds to its receptor, it causes a change in the receiving cell. This change can be excitatory, making the cell more likely to fire an electrical signal, or inhibitory, making it less likely to fire.

There are many different types of neurotransmitter receptors, each specific to a particular neurotransmitter. For example, acetylcholine receptors bind to acetylcholine, while dopamine receptors bind to dopamine. These receptors can be classified into two main categories: ionotropic receptors and metabotropic receptors. Ionotropic receptors are ion channels that open or close upon binding of a neurotransmitter, directly affecting the flow of ions across the cell membrane. Metabotropic receptors, on the other hand, are G protein-coupled receptors that, upon neurotransmitter binding, initiate a cascade of intracellular signaling events, leading to indirect effects on ion channels or other cellular processes.

The function of neurotransmitter receptors is crucial for a wide range of physiological processes, including learning, memory, mood, and motor control. Dysfunction of these receptors is implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, and schizophrenia. Therefore, neurotransmitter receptors are important targets for pharmacological interventions aimed at treating these conditions.
