Välittäjäaineisiin, or neurotransmitters, are chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another. These crucial molecules play a vital role in virtually every aspect of brain function and bodily activity, from mood and cognition to muscle movement and organ regulation.

Neurons communicate through electrical impulses. When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, called the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between neurons. These neurotransmitters then bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, either exciting or inhibiting its activity.

There are many different types of neurotransmitters, each with unique functions. For example, dopamine is associated with reward and pleasure, serotonin with mood and sleep, and acetylcholine with muscle contraction and memory. Glutamate is the primary excitatory neurotransmitter, while GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Dysregulation of neurotransmitter systems can lead to various neurological and psychological conditions. For instance, imbalances in serotonin are linked to depression, and insufficient dopamine is associated with Parkinson's disease. The study of neurotransmitters is fundamental to understanding brain disorders and developing effective treatments.
