Väkijuomat

Väkijuomat is a Finnish term that generally refers to alcoholic beverages. The word literally translates to "power drinks" or "strength drinks," and it encompasses a wide range of alcoholic products. This category includes, but is not limited to, beer, wine, and spirits.

The consumption of väkijuomat has a long history in Finland, intertwined with cultural traditions and social practices. Historically, various fermented beverages were produced and consumed, often made from local ingredients. In modern times, the production and sale of väkijuomat are regulated by the Finnish state. The state-owned company Alko holds a monopoly on the retail sale of beverages containing more than 5.5% alcohol by volume. Products with lower alcohol content, such as most beers and some ciders, can be sold in grocery stores and other retail outlets.

There are also cultural connotations associated with the term. While väkijuomat can be enjoyed responsibly, discussions surrounding alcohol consumption in Finland often address issues of public health, addiction, and social impact. The legal drinking age in Finland is 18 for beverages with an alcohol content up to 22% and 20 for stronger beverages. The sale and consumption of väkijuomat are subject to these regulations.
