In Finland and some other countries, the term "väitöskirjantekijä" specifically refers to a person writing their doctoral dissertation, which is the major academic work required for a doctorate. This research often involves original scholarly work, contributing new knowledge to a specific field.

The process of becoming a väitöskirjantekijä typically begins after completing a Master's degree. The individual then enrolls in a doctoral program at a university, where they are usually assigned a supervisor or a group of supervisors who guide their research. The core of the work involves conducting extensive research, which can include experiments, data analysis, theoretical development, or historical investigation, depending on the discipline.

Throughout their studies, väitöskirjantekijät are expected to publish parts of their research in peer-reviewed academic journals or present it at conferences.
