Uudelleenlähetyskerta is a Finnish term that translates to "retransmission attempt" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of telecommunications and computer networking to describe an instance where a data packet or message is sent again because the initial transmission was unsuccessful.

When a device sends data, it typically expects an acknowledgment (ACK) from the receiving device to confirm that the data arrived correctly. If the sender does not receive this ACK within a certain timeframe, or if it receives a negative acknowledgment (NACK), it assumes the transmission failed. This triggers a retransmission attempt. The sender will then resend the same data packet.

The number of retransmission attempts is usually limited to prevent a sender from endlessly trying to transmit data that cannot be received. If all retransmission attempts fail, the connection may be terminated, or an error reported to the user or application. This mechanism is crucial for ensuring reliable data transfer over networks that may experience packet loss or other transmission errors.
