Utloppen

Utloppen is a Swedish term most often used in geography and hydrology. In Swedish, utlopp means an outlet or discharge, such as the point where water exits a lake, reservoir, or wetland and flows into another body of water. The definite plural form utloppen (the outlets) is used when referring to several such discharge points, whereas the definite singular utloppet refers to a single, specific outlet.

In hydrological descriptions, utloppen are characterized by their role in drainage basins, estuaries, or canal systems, and may be natural (river mouths) or engineered (outlets from dams or treatment plants). They affect saltwater intrusion, sediment transport, and ecological connectivity.

In Swedish-language texts, the term is common for descriptive purposes. In English, it is rarely used directly; the concept is usually translated as “outlet” or “outflow.” The word may also appear in local place names or contexts where Swedish terminology is used in maps or regional descriptions, but it is not, in itself, the name of a widely recognized international topic.
