The word blends the notion of standardized encoding (alluding to Unicode UTF formats) with herd dynamics observed in information cascades.

Origins and scope: The concept emerges in speculative discussions of how platforms organize knowledge and narratives across communities and languages, particularly where ambiguity exists and rapid consensus is rewarded. It is not a formal theory, but a heuristic for analyzing diffusion of interpretation.

Mechanisms: Utfellingherding relies on (1) encoding content into modular, interoperable representations—such as tagged posts, templates, or ontologies—that facilitate cross-posting and reuse; (2) reinforcement through likes, shares, comments, and algorithmic ranking that amplify early interpretations; and (3) cross-platform propagation, which reduces friction for replication.
