Usque

Usque is a Latin adverb and prepositional particle meaning up to, as far as, or even. It marks extent or boundary and is used to indicate the termination of space, time, or degree. In classical Latin, it most often appears with the preposition ad to form expressions of limit, but it can also function as an adverb on its own to intensify or qualify meaning.

When used with ad, usque governs an accusative noun phrase, as in usque ad finem “up to the end” or usque ad astra “to the stars” in poetry. Without ad, usque can function as an adverb meaning “even” or “to the utmost,” occurring in phrases such as usque modo “up to the present” and in other emphatic contexts. The word is common in literary, legal, liturgical, and historical Latin.
