Uranerzen

Uranerzen is a German uranium mining company. It was founded in 1972 and was one of the largest uranium producers in Europe during its operational years. The company was primarily involved in the exploration and mining of uranium deposits in Germany, particularly in Lower Saxony.

The extraction of uranium by Uranerzen faced significant opposition from environmental groups and local communities due to concerns about radioactivity, groundwater contamination, and the long-term disposal of mining waste. Despite these challenges, the company operated several mines, including the Kaelenfeld mine, which was one of the deepest open-cast uranium mines in the world at the time.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the demand for uranium decreased due to a slowdown in nuclear power plant construction and increasing environmental regulations. Uranerzen's operations became less economically viable. The company eventually ceased its mining activities and has since been involved in the decommissioning and remediation of its former mining sites.
