Unterwerken

Unterwerken is a German term meaning "lower works" and is used in mining to designate the portion of a mine located below the principal extraction level. The term distinguishes the deeper, lower network of galleries, shafts, and service rooms from the upper workings, which are located closer to the surface. In mining literature, Unterwerken describe the infrastructure that supports mining activity at depth, including connections between shafts, ore passes, drainage galleries, ventilation routes, and pumping stations.

In traditional deep mining, the Unterwerk served multiple essential functions. Water control and drainage are primary

Today the term is primarily encountered in historical descriptions and in German-language technical literature on old
