Untertassen

Untertassen are small plates designed to be placed beneath cups, typically teacups or coffee cups. Their primary function is to catch drips, protect surfaces from heat, and provide a stable base for the cup. They also serve as a convenient place to rest a spoon or biscuit.

The design of an untertasse often complements the cup it is intended to accompany, forming part of a larger tea or coffee set. They can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, glass, metal, and even plastic. The shape is usually circular, though square and other geometric designs are also common.

Historically, untertassen evolved from the larger trencher plates used in earlier centuries, adapting to the growing popularity of hot beverages like tea and coffee. Early versions were often quite deep, sometimes with a footed base, to allow the drinker to cool the beverage by pouring it into the untertasse. This practice, however, is largely uncommon today.

In modern usage, the untertasse is a standard item in most tableware collections, particularly for formal dining or when serving hot drinks. While their practical function remains, they also contribute to the aesthetic presentation of a beverage. The term "saucer" is the common English equivalent.
