Unnormalizable

Unnormalizable is a term used in mathematics and physics to describe a quantity or a system that cannot be normalized. Normalization is a process where a mathematical object, such as a wave function in quantum mechanics or a probability distribution, is adjusted so that its total integral or sum equals one. This is essential for ensuring that probabilities are correctly interpreted, as the sum of all possible probabilities must always be 100%.

In quantum mechanics, a wave function represents the probability amplitude of a particle's position. For a physically realistic wave function, it must be normalizable, meaning the integral of the square of the wave function over all space must be finite. If a wave function is unnormalizable, it implies that the probability of finding the particle somewhere in space is infinite, which is unphysical. This often occurs in theoretical scenarios involving unbound states or certain idealized models.

Similarly, in probability theory, a probability distribution is considered normalizable if the sum or integral of all its probability values is finite. If a distribution is unnormalizable, it cannot be used to represent a valid probability distribution, as the total probability would not sum to one.
