Unlithified
Unlithified refers to geological material that has not yet undergone lithification, the process by which loose sediment is transformed into solid rock. This typically involves compaction, cementation, and/or recrystallization. Unlithified materials are often unconsolidated and retain many of the characteristics of their original depositional environment.
Common examples of unlithified materials include unconsolidated sand, silt, clay, gravel, and peat. These materials are
The term "unlithified" is often used in contrast to "lithified," which describes materials that have become rock.
